The garden is always buzzing with life. In addition to bees, wasps, and butterflies, you'll also find ladybugs. Not only are they a pleasant and colorful addition to any garden, but they're also diligent predators of aphids. They can eat up to 100 aphids a day, thus protecting your plants!
Both adult ladybugs and ladybug larvae can be purchased from our webshop. Unfortunately, the native two-spotted ladybird, also known as Adalia bipunctata, is listed as vulnerable. With this little house, you provide them a safe haven. It offers shelter, protection, and a safe spot to hibernate. Naturally, they do this in groups. A ladybug hotel is therefore a fun item in the garden.
If they hibernate in the box, the aphids that appear in spring can immediately be combated naturally. It's essential that from early spring, you have flowering plants in your garden because ladybugs feed on pollen when there are no aphids. Of course, it's also crucial to maintain a balance in your garden. To keep ladybugs, there must be aphids.
Handmade Ladybug Hotel
Our insect hotels for ladybugs are expertly crafted in collaboration with the Sint-Kamillus care group.
Sint Kamillus is a care group located in Bierbeek, Belgium. On their three campuses in the vicinity of Leuven, they focus on mental health care and psychiatric care. Together with their patients, they work to provide the best possible care, help and discover their interests and talents. In this way, they jointly map out a path. St-Kamillus partners with individuals and companies to employ patients in the workplace.
We at Rootsum are keen to support this initiative. We offer patients from Sint-Kamillus the opportunity to participate in internships and other work opportunities. It gives them the chance to gain work experience and meet new people.
The result of one of these collaborations is our ladybug house. The insect hotel is entirely handmade and locally produced in the wood workshop of Sint-Kamillus in Bierbeek!
With this box, you not only support your local flora and fauna but also the hard workers of Sint-Kamillus.
Sturdy and Sustainable Insect Hotel
The box is made from Norwegian pine and has a PEFC certificate, an International label promoting sustainable forest management. The wood is robust and lasts several years. To preserve the box as long as possible, it's best to hang it. If placed directly on the ground, the wood may rot faster than usual.
Easy to Hang
The box is easy to use and hang. Simply knock a nail into the wall or tree. The box has a hole in the back, which allows it to be easily hung on the nail.
Where to Hang the Ladybug Box?
It's best hung at a height of 1 meter. Place it in a sunny, wind-sheltered spot protected from rain. Preferably facing south, southwest, or southeast. Leave it hanging throughout the winter.
